Attica has the most violations

During 2001, 159 people were prosecuted following investigations by the Internal Affairs Department, of whom 88 were police officers, 70 private individuals and one a border guard. The 89 officers of the law had a total of 149 charges brought against them. Dereliction of duty was the most common offense with 36 instances, followed by false statements (16 instances), bribery (12 instances) and others. Of the 89 officers, 44 were based in Attica and 45 in the rest of Greece. Of the total number of criminal offenses with which police officers were charged, 61 percent were connected with the execution of their normal police duties, 35 percent had no connection, and 4 percent were not cases of corruption in the accepted sense of the term.
