University wants end to violence
A day after three people were injured during clashes between extreme left- and right-wing students in the grounds of Panteion University in Athens, academics told Kathimerini that they intend to clamp down on the growing violence at the institution. Three students suffered knife wounds after a clash between leftists and right-wingers, following the discovery of a student carrying a flare gun and starter’s pistol. The university said it will sue the student, Gerasimos Papayiannis, for carrying weapons illegally. Panteion’s dean, Stamos Papastamos, told Kathimerini that the university is determined to stop similar events from happening again. He said that there has been a rise in the number of violent incidents since the government’s press office had moved into a building next door. Panteion also intends to take the security issue up with the government, which has asked a panel of academics to look at ways of reforming the law which prevents police from entering university grounds without permission.
