Agricultural Development and Food Minister Evangelos Bassiakos speaks with reporters following a Cabinet meeting at Maximos Mansion yesterday. The minister reassured Greek farmers who are eligible for European Union subsidies that they would receive them by December 1 this year. The minister was responding to concerns expressed by farmers who have been anxious about securing their subsidies before a June 5, 2007 EU deadline. More than 1 million Greek farmers are entitled to EU subsidies, which will now be paid as a lump sum rather than as a proportion of a farmer’s production.
