A kid is prepared for slaughter at an abattoir in Kalamata ahead of Orthodox Easter, when Greeks traditionally roast goats and lambs on a spit as part of festive celebrations. Government officials have stepped up checks on meat markets and butchers’ shops around the country ahead of the holiday. Piraeus prefecture officials yesterday discovered 3.5 tons of rotting pork, beef and poultry in a meat warehouse after local residents complained about the stench. Police arrested the owner, Nikos Grivas, nearby. He will be today charged with putting public health at risk. Local prefect Yiannis Michas warned consumers to be extremely cautious when purchasing meat in the runup to Easter.
