Prison escape plan foiled, authorities say

Police say a search inside the Corfu island prison has turned up two pistols, a silencer, knives, most of them improvised, two wooden cudgels, cellphones and drugs.

Authorities believe that a mass escape plan was afoot.

Several lifers convicted for serious crimes are among the prison's population.
