Greece to woo EU students with uni courses in English
The Education Ministry aims to draw students from European Union countries to Greece for undergraduate degrees in the English language, with a bill being tabled in Parliament this week targeting students principally from Balkan member-states, Kathimerini has learned.
According to Article 82 of the bill, Greek universities will be able to offer undergraduate courses in the English language across a range of subjects. Existing legislation limits access to these courses to students from non-EU states.
The reform “aims to boost the international character of [Greek] universities, their autonomy and their openness and promote our country as an international hub for foreign citizens,” according to the report prefacing the bill.
The development comes six months after Education Minister Niki Kerameus heralded the first English-language undergraduate course by a Greek state university, a four-year Classics program at Athens University.
