Greek police arrest 61 migrants after Thessaloniki violence

A large-scale police operation in the wider area around the main railway station in the northern port city of Thessaloniki led to the arrest of 61 foreign nationals who were in Greece illegally, authorities said Tuesday.

The operation took place between 7 p.m. and midnight on Monday, with police rounding up a total of 160 foreign nationals after complaints from concerned residents about frequent bloody brawls in the area.

Authorities said that procedures will begin for the deportation of those arrested, who are mainly from Pakistan, Iran, Iraq and Algeria.
