ND slams government for failing to crack down on far-left violence
Greece’s conservative opposition on Wednesday slammed the SYRIZA government for failing to crack down on far-left violence.
The criticism came hours after a vandalism attack on the home of the US ambassador to Athens that was carried out by members of the anti-establishment group Rouvikonas (Greek for Rubicon).
“Toleration equals complicity,” New Democracy said in a statement addressed to the country’s Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, which also referred to a protest march held in the capital in solidarity with convicted November 17 terrorist Dimitris Koufodinas and a firebomb attack on PASOK’s headquarters on Tuesday.
ND has often accused the government of being unusually tolerant of anti-establishment groups in order to appease SYRIZA’s left-wing voter base.
Wednesday’s paint attack on Pyatt’s residence was also condemned by Stavros Theodorakis, leader of To Potami centrist party. In a tweet, Theodorakis called on government ministers to “protect the country from vandals that make a mockery of the state.
