Seven convicted in connection with human trafficking ring
A National Intelligence Agency (EYP) official and an officer of the Greek Police’s immigration unit are among seven people who have been convicted in connection with a human trafficking racket believed to have operated between 2010 and 2015.
The EYP official, code-named Nikitas, was given a nine-year suspended sentence after being found guilty of running a criminal gang and trafficking in migrants, and the police officer got a six-year suspended term for taking bribes to free migrants awaiting deportation.
The remaining defendants included a Greek marine engineer who was given an eight-year prison sentence.
All were released after appealing their sentences.
