Three migrants die in car accident near Kavala
Three undocumented migrants were killed near the city of Kavala in northern Greece on Thursday morning when the vehicle they were traveling in ran off the Egnatia Highway, overturned and caught fire.
Police sources said a truck had overturned in the same area three hours before the accident and traffic police were diverting motorists.
The driver of the car carrying the migrants ignored a police signal to stop and lost control of the vehicle, resulting in the crash. Firefighters pulled out the charred bodies of three people, while three more passengers were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Another three people in the car emerged unscathed.
The accident was the latest in a series of collisions involving smuggling vehicles on the Egnatia Highway; there have been 16 fatalities in 2018 compared to seven last year.
