NATO invites FYROM to join Alliance once name deal completed
NATO will invite the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) to start talks on joining the Alliance once the country completes all the conditions included in the name deal signed with Greece, according to the draft conclusions of the NATO summit published by MIA news agency on Wednesday.
"We welcome the historic agreement between Athens and Skopje on the solution of the name issue. In line with our policy, we have decided to invite the government in Skopje to begin accession talks to join our Alliance,” the draft reads.
“Full implementation of all prescribed internal procedures with respect to the agreement on the solution of the name issue is a condition for a successful conclusion of the accession process,” it adds.
Greece and FYROM agreed in June to end a 27-year dispute by renaming the latter North Macedonia, in a deal that will take months to finalize.
