Migrant arrivals continue, riot breaks out at Moria camp
Tensions spiked on Monday night at the cramped Moria reception center on Lesvos following the arrival of dozens of migrants to the island from neighboring Turkey.
The upheaval at the camp followed an argument between two groups of Iraqi men and escalated into a brawl that led to an on-site clinic being vandalized. The reason for the dispute was unclear, though fights regularly break out between frustrated migrants, and there were no reports of injuries.
On nearby Chios one migrant sustained minor injuries during a similar brawl at the Vial center.
The rising tensions come as arrivals from Turkey have picked up.
Over the Easter holiday, 607 migrants reached the islands of the eastern Aegean – 418 on Lesvos, 120 on Samos and 69 on Chios – a total of 1,173 migrants reached the islands in April and 5,330 since the beginning of the year. Most of the migrants are Syrians, followed by Iraqis and Afghans.
