ND says coalition divided on issue of detained Greek soldiers

Opposition New Democracy on Friday accused the SYRIZA-Independent Greeks (ANEL) coalition of being divided over the issue of the two servicemen detained by Turkey.

Turkish authorities detained the two servicemen last week after they crossed the shared border during a patrol.

In comments made Friday, Defense Minister Panos Kammenos, who is also leader of the government’s right-wing coalition partner ANEL, called for their immediate release, describing them as “hostages.”

In a tweet posted later on Friday, New Democracy’s shadow defense minister, Vassilis Kikilias, urged Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias to take a stand on Kammenos’s remarks.

“[Are we seeing] two different lines, like [on the name dispute] with Skopje?,” he said.
