Director of Chios’s Vial migrant hot spot resigns
Greece’s Migration Policy Ministry on Tuesday confirmed that the director of an identification and processing center on Chios has resigned.
Theofilos Tsingalakis, who was hired to run the Vial hot spot on the eastern Aegean island after a competition for the post a few months ago, cited mounting pressure from local proponents as the reason stepping down, according to sources cited by the ANA-MPA news agency.
The official did not clarify who was pressuring him or to what end, but indicated that he had been placed in a difficult position as a result of growing anger among a large part of the local population over delays by Athens to transfer thousands of migrants and asylum seekers trapped in the overcrowded camp to the mainland.
