Suspected Ambelokipi rapist remanded in custody

A 25-year-old man accused of attacking nine women in the busy Ambelokipi neighborhood north of central Athens was remanded in custody on Thursday.

The man, who was arrested in an undercover operation on Sunday night, is being charged with three counts of rape and six counts of attempted rape.

Following his arrest for accosting an undercover police officer, the suspected assailant denied that he had sexually assaulted nine women in separate incidents after spotting them walking alone after dark. After being positively identified by his alleged victims, however, the young man is said to have broke down and confessed to the attacks.

The 25-year-old is expected to be examined by a psychiatrist.
