Downtown Monastiraki metro station to close at 5.30 p.m.

Police will be shutting down the central Athens metro station of Monastiraki at 5.30 p.m. on Wednesday for security reasons.

The station will be closed for the duration of a protest rally at Monastiraki Square and will not reopen until police give the green light.

The rally is reportedly being organized by an anti-establishment group that has taken issue with the introduction of electronic ticket barriers in the metro system.
