Greek government voices concern over Erdogan comments ahead of visit
The Greek government has voiced its concern over controversial comments by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan ahead of his two-day visit to Greece.
During an interview with Alexis Papachelas for Skai TV and Kathimerini broadcast Wednesday, Erdogan suggested that the Treaty of Lausanne, which set out the modern borders between Greece and Turkey, be updated, saying such move could be beneficial for both countries.
Government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos said the remarks caused “deep concerns and [raise] questions.”
“The Greek government and the prime minister [Alexis Tsipras] wish that the visit provides an opportunity to build bridges, not walls,” Tzanakopoulos said.
“Respect for the Treaty of Lausanne is the exclusive and non-negotiable founding stone on which honest cooperation between the two countries can be built,” he added.
