Super League chief charged with corruption

The general director of soccer’s Super League and former president of the Greek Football Federation (EPO) Vasilis Gagatsis was indicted on Monday on corruption charges.

Gagatsis is being charged over his mishandling of a check for 1 million Swiss francs that was handed to EPO in 2008 by UEFA president at the time Michel Platini in order to help finance the rebuilding of soccer facilities damaged by devastating fires in Greece.

But the money ended up in the account of former Greece national team coach Otto Rehhagel, as a bonus from EPO for his services.

However, a prosecutor’s investigation revealed that EPO had no contractual obligation to deposit the bonus in the account of the German coach who led Greece to glory at the Euro soccer championship finals in Portugal in 2004.
