No service on Tuesday as metro workers walk off the job
There will be no services on the the Athens metro on Tuesday as employees walk off the job to protest the government’s privatization plans.
The 24-hour strike will affect lines 2 and 3 of the metro, but not the electric railway (Line 1), which will run as normal. It will affect services to and from Athens International Airport as Doukissis Plakentias station, which connects the metro to the airport, will also be closed.
Meanwhile, as transport authorities try to manage the transition to the electronic ticket, following the abolition of its old paper counterpart last week, upheaval on the metro system has peaked.
Electronic barriers started operating at four metro stations on Monday in a test for what is soon to apply across the network. In protest, unionists representing workers opened the barriers at Aghios Antonios station.
