Piraeus Municipality collecting food and clothing for flood victims
The Municipality of Piraeus has launched a donation drive to collect food and clothing for hundreds of people in western Attica who saw their homes and possessions destroyed by deadly flash floods on Wednesday.
Collection points have been set up at the municipal swimming pool at Votsalakia beach, the indoor sports arena at 552 Akti Miaouli and the municipal gyms at 142 Aghia Sofia in downtown Piraeus, at 109 Fragiadon in Kallipoli and at 1 Veikou in Neo Faliro.
Aid has been coming in from different sources since Wednesday’s flash floods, which claimed 16 lives and injured dozens in the seaside towns of Mandra and Nea Peramos. Rescue teams are also looking for six people who were reported missing.
Parliament speaker Nikos Voutsis on Friday said the House will be donating 1 million euros to relief efforts. On Thursday, Archbishop Ieronymos ordered the Church of Greece’s Apostoli charity to provide assistance to residents affected by the floods. And the AB Vassilopoulos supermarket chain, meanwhile, said it will be distributing 500,000 euros’ worth of foodstuffs to the residents of Mandra and Nea Peramos.
