Number of missing from floods at six, as death toll rises to 16
Six people have been reported missing from Wednesday’s floods in western Attica, while the number of confirmed deaths rose to 16 on Thursday morning.
The majority of the casualties were residents the seaside towns of Mandra and Nea Peramos, which suffered serious flooding on Wednesday. A few were motorists who drowned in their cars or were swept into the sea.
According to the ANA-MPA news agency, four motorists are among those reported missing, while rescue crews are also looking for two people feared trapped in their homes.
Meanwhile, downpours continued on Thursday, affecting many parts of the country, but particularly the western mainland and Attica.
In Attica, heavy rain has caused flooding on the Attiki Odos highway, prompting the closure of Exit 1 to Elefsina, and Salamina Avenue.
