Storms claim one life in Corfu, cause havoc in northern Peloponnese
A weather system dubbed Eurydice swept across Greece on Sunday and Monday, claiming a life on the Ionian island of Corfu and wreaking havoc in the northern Peloponnese.
In Corfu, a 57-year-old man identified as a British tourist drowned after the car he was in with his family was swept up in a flash flood on the road between Perivoli and Santa Barbara on Sunday night. His wife and daughter were rescued by emergency crews.
Gale-force winds also caused extensive problems in the area of Lefkimi, Aghios Georgios and Melikia, where they knocked out electricity poles and felled dozens of trees, while downpours flooded streets, homes, shops and farms.
In the northern Peloponnese, strong showers caused extensive flooding on the rural road network of Argolida, as well as in the town of Nafplio, where neither motorists nor pedestrians were unable to navigate the flooded streets and sidewalks for several hours. The rains also flooded hundreds of hectares of farmland.
According to meteorologists, the front will persist through the week, bringing showers and storms to other parts of the country, including the islands of the eastern Aegean.
