Niarchos Foundation donates more than 200 mln for health services
Construction of two new hospitals will be able to get under way thanks to a donation of more than 200 million euros made by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) to help the country’s ailing health system.
The donation was unveiled on Wednesday by SNF co-president Andreas Dracopoulos, Health Minister Andreas Xanthos and his alternate, Pavlos Polakis. It is the second biggest single donation made by the charitable foundation to the Greek state after the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in southern Athens, where the presentation was held.
According to the plan, the money will be used to build a general hospital in Komotini, northern Greece, as well as a children’s hospital in the northern port city of Thessaloniki. It will also go toward repairing three helicopters owned by the EKAV ambulance service and purchasing two small planes for emergency air lifts, among other needed actions.
