Tax officer murder suspect attacked outside Athens courthouse
A 58-year-old man being charged with the murder of a 32-year-old tax officer was attacked and beaten by angry citizens on Wednesday as police officers escorted him from the capital's Evelpidon court complex after a magistrate gave him until Friday to prepare his defense.
The victim's mother was in the crowd, according to sources, and shouting "death to the murderer" while the father tried to approach the suspect but was kept back by police.
The 58-year-old man has reportedly admitted to killing Theodora Zeberi at Athens’s Second Cemetery in the western suburb of Rizoupoli on October 18.
The suspect, a Greek national with a record for drug-related offenses, is believed to have stabbed the 32-year-old multiple times with the aim of robbing her.
He made off with just 25 euros, according to police.
Investigators claim to have irrefutable evidence putting the suspect at the scene of the crime, as well as CCTV footage allegedly showing him trying to sell the victim’s cell phone a few hours after the attack at a shop near Omonia Square in downtown Athens.
