Attack by GD members seen as attempt at show of force
A prosecution lawyer in the ongoing trial of Golden Dawn MPs and supporters who was attacked by members of the neo-Nazi party earlier this week has described the assault as an attempted show of force by GD in the wake of a series of departures from the party in recent months.
Evgenia Kouniaki and another woman were assaulted by a group of GD members as they got off a trolley bus near the Athens appeals court on Wednesday morning.
According to Kouniaki, the group of around 12 people had been scattering fliers in the street when the trolley bus pulled up at a stop. When they started verbally abusing a passenger on the bus, Kouniaki said she intervened and was punched in the face by one of the crowd. Other members of the group tried to board the trolley bus to attack the passenger, she added.
It appears that the second woman was injured in her attempt to obstruct them.
Police have launched a probe into the incident, questioning more than 20 people.
