Terror suspect remanded in custody after testimony
A 32-year-old Syrian refugee charged with being a member of a terrorist organization was taken into custody after testifying before a prosecutor in Alexandroupoli, northestern Greece, Monday.
During the three-and-a-half-hour hearing, the suspect denied having been a member of the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) or the Al-Nusra Front. Even though he had originally admitted membership of ISIS, the suspect said Monday he had fought under the banner of the Free Syrian Army rebel group.
The suspect was arrested on Thursday following a review of his asylum application. Police said they found videos and images on his phone that appeared to show ISIS militants torturing and executing victims.
On Monday, his lawyer, Triantafyllia Tsioulpa, said the footage was obtained without a subpoena and was therefore inadmissible.
Tsioulpa told Kathimerini that the footage does not back claims that the suspect is a member of a terrorist group. She added that she had asked authorities to confirm whether her client has been listed as a terrorist suspect by crime-fighting agencies including Europol, Interpol and Sirene.
Sources told Kathimerini that no such record exists.
