Municipal workers stage sit-in at Corfu town hall

Members of the union representing local authority workers (POE-OTA) were on Wednesday staging a sit-in at the town hall of the Ionian island of Corfu, demanding that the government give permanent jobs to short-term workers.

The Court of Auditors last month ruled that extending fixed-term contracts is a violation of the Constitution.

The decision mainly affects cleaners and kindergarten workers who are often employed on successive fixed-term contracts to cover staff shortages, without enjoying the benefits of permanent status.
