More than half of damaged buildings in Lesvos found unsafe
Almost 700 of the 1,245 buildings damaged in last week’s earthquake on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos have been deemed by inspectors to be beyond repair. More specifically, 690 were characterized as “unusable.”
Overall, out of 1,092 homes that were inspected, only 547 remain safe to live in, while 38 out of 64 commercial spaces were described as unsafe for use.
Moreover, out of 54 churches inspected, 34 were deemed unsafe. With regard to 46 other buildings, inspectors said that 36 were not suitable for use.
The 6.1 magnitude on Lesvos killed one woman and left 10 injured.
