Police arrest fraudster on holiday island of Mykonos

A 38-year-old man has been accused of cheating tourism businesses on the popular Greek holiday island of Mykonos out of at least 38,000 euros’ worth of goods and services, police said on Tuesday.

The suspect, who faced a prosecutor on Syros, the capital of the Cycladic islands, is said to have presented forged bank deposit statements in order to purchase room and vehicle rentals.

He is said to have been active between May and September last year and again on one occasion last week, cheating five businesses out of fees totaling more than 38,000 euros.

Officers searching his belongings discovered a wireless radio tuned into the police’s frequency, as well as handwritten notes of his debts to various businesses on the island.

The 38-year-old was also wanted on arson charges.
