Thessaloniki residents asked not to throw out trash over long weekend
Thessaloniki city authorities have appealed to residents not to dispose of their garbage in street dumpsters for the duration of the Pentecost long weekend due to strike action by municipal contract workers.
The union representing municipal contract workers in the northern port city said they will walk off the job on Saturday, Sunday and Monday to demand that they be hired on a permanent basis.
According to municipal authorities, between 400 and 420 tons of waste are disposed of daily on the city’s streets.
