Protesting contract workers call off rally after minister’s assurances
Local authority workers on short-term contracts staged a demonstration outside the offices of the Interior Ministry on Tuesday, demanding the granting of permanent status, but they broke up the rally after Minister Panos Skourletis reportedly offered unionists some reassurances.
According to sources, Skourletis told members of the POE-OTA local authority workers' union that the government would draft legislation addressing their demands for permanency, and for unpaid wages once the State Audit Council has officially ruled on their case.
Workers had been planning a subsequent protest outside the offices of the Administrative Reform Ministry but called it off following the unionists' meeting with Skourletis.
