Ferries, buses and market sellers to join Wednesday’s general strike
Greece’s ferry boats will remain tied up at port for two days and Athens bus drivers will walk off the job from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday as part of nationwide protests at new austerity measures.
Dockworkers said they will be on strike on Tuesday and Wednesday, meaning there will be no connection between the country’s islands and the mainland for 48 hours.
The government’s decision to pass fresh measures demanded by the country’s creditors has also prompted a 24-hour strike by the country’s two biggest public and private labor unions, GSEE and ADEDY on Wednesday.
Journalists, meanwhile, have also planned a strike for Tuesday so that there will be no newspapers on the day of the nationwide action, which will also affect public hospitals and open-air markets.
Bus drivers in the Greek capital will also be extending their protest to Thursday and Friday, when they will walk off the job from the start of their shift until 9 a.m. and from 9 p.m. until the end of the night shift.
