FM to brief parties on Greek energy plans in Eastern Mediterranean
The National Council on Foreign Policy will convene on Wednesday for a briefing by Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias and Energy Minister Giorgos Stathakis on Greece’s energy plans in the Eastern Mediterranean in light of the recent developments in the region.
Even though Wednesday's meeting had already been scheduled, it coincides with a recent spike in Turkish activity in the region – especially in and around Cyprus’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Ankara on Tuesday issued issued a notice to airmen (notam) and another navigational telex (navtex) concerning areas around Cyprus.
Meanwhile, 18 New Democracy lawmakers have submitted a question to Kotzias asking him to clarify the government’s positions with regard to the Balkans in the wake of recent statements by Defense Minister Panos Kammenos, who referred to the creation of a Christian crescent in the Balkans and also claimed that ethnic Albanians form the majority in FYROM.
