Tensions simmer on Chios after second night of migrant clashes
Tensions at overcrowded reception centers for migrants on the eastern Aegean island of Chios continued to simmer on Friday following a second night of clashes between young men of different ethnicities.
Thursday night’s clashes broke out in the Vial and Souda facilities and reportedly involved Afghan, Syrian and Algerian men.
The reason for the altercations was unclear but tensions have been rising as many migrants have been in the camps for months.
There were scuffles in the main town later on Thursday when migrants in the main square heard of the unrest involving their compatriots at the centers.
Police detained 12 people while six migrants were reported to have sustained minor injuries.
