Washington says willing to attend Cyprus summit
Washington will send a representative to the upcoming Cyprus talks in Geneva, should this be required by the United Nations, a US envoy has said.
“The US supports the effort currently being taken by both leaders on the island and is ready to offer its assistance if requested,” US Ambassador to Cyprus Kathleen Doherty said during a meeting with representatives of the Greek-American community in Washington.
“If the United Nations request for the US’s participation, then we will attend,” she said.
A multilateral summit will take place in Geneva between January 9-11.
On Tuesday, Nicosia described as “unhelpful” recent comments by Turkish-Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, who insisted it will be impossible to find a settlement to the island’s problem if it does not include a rotating presidency between the two states that would comprise a Cypriot federal state.
The Greek Cypriot adminstration said in response that public statements setting preconditions do not help the ongoing negotiation process ahead of the Geneva meeting.
