Athens court rules against extradition of three Turkish military officers

The Athens Council of Appeals Court Judges has ruled against the extradition of three of the eight Turkish military officers who fled to Greece in July following a failed coup in Turkey.

A ruling on another three officers is expected Tuesday.

Ankara has demanded the extradition of the officers – two commanders, four captains and two sergeants – to stand trial for their alleged role in the failed coup, and for an alleged assassination attempt against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The officers’ lawyer has repeatedly claimed they will not receive a fair trial if they are returned to Turkey, and that their lives will be at risk.
