Cyprus does not confirm reports of UN special envoy returning to island
Reports of UN Special Envoy Espen Barth Eide returning to Cyprus after talks in Switzerland to reunify the ethnically split island collapsed were not confirmed by Cyprus’s government on Wednesday.
Speaking on Wednesday, Cypriot government spokesman Nikos Christodoulides said there was no official information regarding the issue. He also added that there had been no talk of a possible phone conversation between UN chief Ban Ki-moon with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and the leader of the breakaway Turkish-Cypriot state Mustafa Akinci.
According to Greek state news agency ANA-MPA, Anastasiades informed European Parliament Martin Schultz of the Swiss talks on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Anastasiades was expected to hold a press conference at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, instead of a televised address, as it had been reported earlier in the day.
