Greek government condemns attack on French Embassy
The Greek coalition government condemned an attack on the French Embassy in Athens on Thursday, labeling the incident an act of terrorism.
The incident occurred when unidentified assailants launched a hand grenade outside the embassy. A policeman on guard outside the building was wounded in the attack which occurred a few days before an official visit by outgoing US President Barack Obama.
“The relations of friendship and solidarity between Greece and France can't be affected in the slightest by such terrorist acts,” government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos (photo) said in a statement released on Thursday.
SYRIZA, the leftist party which heads the coalition, also condemned the incident. “We firmly condemn the terrorist attack on the French Embassy. We express our solidarity with the special guard who was injured during the attack,” noted the party in a statement released on Thursday.
Meawhile, through his Twitter account, opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis voiced his “concern” and “anger” over the attack, noting that the safety of citizens was a top priority. Mitsotakis also expressed his solidarity with the wounded policeman and the Greek police force in general.
