Fresh effort to convene ESR on Monday
Parliament Speaker Nikos Voutsis has called for a fresh session of House and deputy speakers to discuss the mater of convening the National Broadcasting Council (ESR) for Monday 3 p.m.
Reinstating ESR is key to breaking the deadlock regarding Greece’s private broadcasting licenses after a government auction for four nationwide TV permits was deemed unconstitutional by the country’s highest administrative court.
The left-led government on Monday submitted an amendment to Parliament suspending the right of State Minister Nikos Papas to grant broadcasting rights, an authority that previously rested with ESR.
In comments made Wednesday, opposition New Democracy spokesman Giorgos Koumoutsakos said that the government would have to scrap the law altogether before the council is convened.
