State minister, local officials to discuss Chios migrant crisis
State Minister Alekos Fambouraris has called for an emergency meeting at Maximos Mansion next week to discuss the migration crisis on the eastern Aegean island of Chios.
The meeting, set to take place on Monday, will be attended by Chios Mayor Manolis Vournous, regional governor for the Northern Aegean Christiana Kalogirou and local MPs.
On Monday migrants at the island’s Moria hotspot set fire to part of the facility that handles asylum applications during a protest over delays in the asylum process. The examination of asylum claims has since been suspended.
According to figures by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), a total of 2,228 migrants and refugees have arrived on Greece’s islands from Turkey in the past 20 days.
