Start of trial over suicide of bullying victim delayed to Friday
The first day of the trial into the suicide of Ioannina Dairy School student Vangelis Giakoumakis in 2015, believed to have been prompted by violent bullying by fellow students, was delayed until Friday in the northwestern Greek city.
Standing trial over the 20-year-old student’s suicide are the school’s former director, the supervisor of the dorm where Giakoumakis was staying and where much of the abuse is said to have taken place, and New Democracy MP Christos Markoyiannakis, who is accused of using his political influence to cover up for Giakoumakis’s tormentors.
Giakoumakis was found dead among bushes near his dorm 37 days after being reported missing by his family.
