Major truck-theft ring smashed

The Greek Police on Saturday announced the arrest of seven suspects believed to be key members of one of the biggest truck- and car-theft gangs active in Greece over the past few years.

The suspects – a Greek, three Albanians and one each from Nigeria, Somalia and Cameroon – are believed to have run the gang behind hundreds of vehicle thefts in different parts of Attica.

Investigators found evidence linked to at least 64 cases suggesting that the vehicles were taken to a junkyard in Aspropyrgos, west of Athens, where they were either disassembled for parts or sold whole on the international black market, generating thousands of euros in revenues for the gang.

The same gang is also believed to have been involved in drug smuggling, with police seizing nearly 73 kilograms of unprocessed cannabis during the arrest of one of the suspects near the Greek-Albanian border.
