Scuffles break out in Oraiokastro over refugee, migrant children’s schooling
Authorities in Oraiokastro in northern Greece are trying to put a lid on simmering tensions that have arisen between groups opposed to refugee and migrant children staying at a nearby camp attending a local school and pro-migrant activists.
Tension arose between the two groups on Friday night after the pro-migrant activists held a really in response to an earlier gathering by the anti-migrant groups calling on the government to cancel plans to provide education to hundreds of migrant and refugee minors at the country’s public schools.
Riot police used tear gas to disperse the crowds but there are concerns that the tensions could resume as the government’s plans are put into effect.
