Turkish athletes make symbolic journeys to Lesvos
Turkish long-distance swimmer Seda Kansuk covered the 11 kilometers between Assos, Turkey, and Eftalou on Lesvos in a symbolic swim dedicated to peace and friendship among nations on Sunday. Greece’s Coexistence citizens’ group assisted the 45-year-old Kansuk in organizing the swim, while a number of its volunteers swam the final 150 meters alongside her.
Meanwhile, after rowing to Lesvos from Ayvalik, Turkey, last Friday, a journey which took seven hours, 50-year-old Turkish activist Hussein Urkmez is now circumnavigating the island, which is expected to take about two weeks. He said he had chosen the island because of its stance toward refugees and migrants.
