German media say reparations issue ‘closed’
Germany considers the question of war reparations to Greece closed, according to German media on Wednesday, after Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras revived his government’s bid this week to seek wartime compensation from Berlin.
According to Handelsblatt newspaper, the German government considers the matter “closed” while the tabloid Bild stressed that Berlin completely rejects the Greek demand.
On Tuesday, Tsipras pledged his government would do “whatever is necessary” so that the Germany pays.
However, critics say, he has revived the subject to divert attention away from Greece’s upcoming difficult bailout negotiations.
