Kos mayor writes to PM with fears about Turkish-EU migrant deal
The mayor of Kos Giorgos Kyritsis has written to Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and to other party leaders to express his acute concern about the fate of Turkey's deal with the European Union to crack down on migration across the Aegean.
In his letter, the mayor writes that authorities on Kos have made major efforts to offset the impact of an unprecedented influx of migrants on tourism and have managed to limit losses.
A new crisis would set the island back immeasurably, he said. "It would be disastrous, at this stage, that we are continuing our efforts to minimize the losses, if we were to face another uncontrolled wave of migrants," he wrote.
He noted that other European countries, which have closed their borders to migrants, have left Greece to handle the crisis alone.
