Prosecutors’ union hits out against threats linked to Noor 1 trial
The union representing Greek judges and prosecutors on Monday issued a statement, declaring that the vigor and morale of judicial officials would not be overcome by threats.
The statement followed an incident involving two burly men who threatened the mother of appeals court prosecutor Maria Troupi who has been involved in the case of the Noor 1 heroin smuggling ship.
"The unprecedented threats and unethical blackmail of prosecutors which are aimed at harming justice and by extension democracy will not overcome the vigor and morale of Greek prosecutors," a statement said.
The threats came just a few days after bomb disposal expert carried out a controlled explosion of a parcel bomb delivered to the home in Ymittos, in eastern Athens, of a judge involved in the Noor 1 drug smuggling trial.
Last week a Piraeus prosecutor recommended life sentences for five suspects implicated in the Noor 1 heroin smuggling case.
The sentences are expected to be announced on Tuesday.
