Fire burns for third day on Evia amid state of emergency
A fire continued to burn for the third day on Monday in the area of Limni in northern Evia as authorities considered declaring a state of emergency.
Fire service officials indicated that the outlook was slightly better on Monday as the fire was less intense than it had been on the first two days. However, fears of winds intensifying throughout the day kept the fire service on alert.
Citizens' Protection Minister Nikos Toskas was in Limni on Monday to assess the situation and he chaired a meeting of local and regional officials.
Local officials indicated that the area will remain in a state of emergency until the blaze is doused.
A total of 140 firefighters are participating in efforts to douse the blaze, manning 58 fire engines and aided by 30 soldiers and dozens of volunteers. Three water-dropping aircraft and three helicopters are helping the effort.
