Police officer among 29 arrested over migrant trafficking ring

Police appear to have cracked two rings trafficking migrants across the Evros River on the Greek-Turkish border, making a total of 29 arrests, including one police officer, in the last couple of days.

According to reports, the migrants would pay the smugglers 1,800 euros to get them across the Evros, traveling both to and from Greece.

Police said they conducted raids in the regions of Evros, Thessaloniki and Attica.

Among those arrested were the leaders of the two gangs – a 57-year-old Greek and a 27-year-old man from Armenia.

One of the rings made profits of 320,000 euros by trafficking 400 migrants from last December to April while the other earned 360,000 euros trafficking 200 migrants since last September until May.
