Greek Asylum Service received 4,288 asylum applications in May
The Greek Asylum Service received 4,288 asylum applications in May, most of them from individuals stranded on the Aegean islands, Kathimerini understands.
Officials said a total of 2,858 asylum claims were filed by migrants who arrived on the Greek islands after the implementation of the EU agreement with Turkey on March 20.
Another 5,919 claims were pending.
The service recently completed three years of operation, as the first application was made on June 10, 2013. Since then, officials have recorded 41,026 claims (11,371 women, 29,655 men, and 1,598 unaccompanied minors) and granted international protection at first instance to 6,828 people.
